Portrait Photography Tips - How to Capture Stunning Pictures of Your Children

Enter our FREE Competition - Win £150 worth of Pop Art Portraits every month! 'Cute Kid' & 'Cute Pet' prizes to be won.

Photography is one of the most popular hobbies nowadays. With a camera in your hand, you can take pictures of just about anyone or anything you lay your eyes on. But when transferring your Photo to Canvas you want the photo to be the best it possibly can be! We would like to share some tips on achieving the best Canvas Prints possible!

Photography has several types and there are certain people that specialise on each type. Portrait Photography is a renowned type of photography. First of all, portrait photography is defined wherein the main focus is on the face and the expression of the subject. The purpose of this kind of photography is to show the mood, likeness and personality of whoever is being photographed. One thing that separates portrait photography from other photography techniques is the fact that the subjects being used are non-professional models. The most common subjects for portrait photography are children. Children are normally happy and carefree, making them the perfect models for portrait photography. If you want to take shots of your children like a pro, here are some portrait photography tips that you may utilise.

Below are our top ten Portrait Photography tips:

1. Do not stick to one angle. Change your perspective.
This is first up on the list of portrait photography tips for many reasons. First of all, the majority of portrait shots are captured with the camera positioned on the subject’s eye level or around it. Although this is standard in photography, experimenting with different angles to shoot from can provide that certain “WOW” factor in your portrait. One good idea is to shoot from the top while looking down on your subject. You may also do it the other way around, with you staying as close as possible to the ground while shooting up. Regardless of what angle, you will surely find something interesting with your shot. Experiment!

2. Alter eye contact.
The eyes of your subject can greatly affect the whole picture. Usually, photographers have their subjects look directly at the lens of the camera. This creates a “connection” between the model and the people who are looking at the image. Some also prefer no eye contact at all. Looking off the camera shows candidness. Moreover, the viewer of the picture gets a bit curious as to what the subject is looking at, particularly when the subject is laughing, crying or showing any emotions. There are also some photographers that have the models looking at objects in the frame. A good example is a child looking hungrily at his plate. Experiment!

3. Learn when to “break the rules”.
Photography also has its share of rules. Now don’t get me wrong, these rules are really very useful. However, they are not applicable at all times. Sometimes, you have got to break free from rules to create stunning photos. Do I have to say it again?

4. Experiment with your lighting.
Lighting is essential in photography. Sometimes, the lighting can determine the quality of the shot. There are literally numerous possibilities when using lighting in your portraits. Silhouetting or backlighting creates a sense of power while side lighting can produce a great mood. And remember you do not need expensive lighting to do this. Simply use what you have around your house. POsition lights in different areas and see which results you prefer.

5. Take your subject out of his/her comfort zone.
Have your subject try something new. He or she should not get used to limited poses and angles. One thing that he may try is the jumping shot. This can create a real unique portrait. Try something out of the box every once in a while. However, always try to show the subjects character through the photograph.

6. Capture candid portraits.
Sometime, posed shots become boring and overrated. There are some subjects that do not mesh well with a posed environment or they simply do not look good on posed pictures. If this is the case, you may try the candid approach. Take a picture of your child while he is playing, eating or taking a bath. This will make the whole “candid” thing natural. Again use this time to experiment with lighting at different levels.

7. Include props in your photo shoot.
Adding props into your portraits is a way of producing another subject of interest that can improve your shot. You should, however, use props that will not capture the focus of the viewer. Rather, use some props that will give a sense of story to the image. For your own children then why not use that favourite toy? This can only add to your 'connection' with the photograph. You will always have that memory to look back on when your children outgrow that favourite toy!

8. Center your attention on a single body part. Do close ups.
This is one of the most effective portrait photography tips being utilized by professionals. Take a close picture of any of your subject’s body parts. The usual targets are the hands, mouth, eyes and even the lower body. These kinds of portraits can leave the viewers of the portraits wondering about its meaning. Try a low shot with the hand being the closest in view and the child's face distant in the background.

9. Make parts of your subject unclear.
You probably have seen portraits where everything but the subject is vague and unclear. This technique is done on purpose and can put emphasis on the subject and not on the people or objects that surround it. Or have a reputable company like MattsCanvas deal with such amendments for you.

10. Capture multiple shots.
Most of the cameras today have “continuous shooting” or “burst” modes. Set your camera to this mode and start taking multiple shots. In doing so, you will be making a series of pictures that could be combined together rather than a single image. This idea is perfect for children, since they change positions quickly.

By applying the aforementioned Portrait Photography tips, you can start taking pictures of the little ones just like a professional photographer.

You can put any photos to canvas. You may want to recollect on your happy days with friends, first love, first date, wedding, first kiss, or graduation days with the help of canvas prints. They will be printed directly on canvas so your pictures would look like paintings.

The end results are vibrant. You can add an effect on them. You can specify that you want a charcoal effect on it, or you want it to be black and white, or you simply want it to be colored.

You can also add a frame to the finish product to complement the painting “feel” of the canvas print. Photos to canvas can either be stretched, framed, or gallery wrapped.

Gallery wrapping is the choice of artwork owners when they want to show only the entire artwork upfront without any staples or nails showing. The canvas is stretched and stapled only at the back of the wooden frame.

Gone were the days when offset printing or printing with the use of color molds is utilized to print photos to canvas. In those days, a color scheme is followed and the canvas must go through the offset printer several times just to achieve the finished product. With this procedure, the results are not that good.

Thanks to modern technology, you do not have to follow RGB or CMYK scheme and you do not have to wait long just to see the results. Modern large scale printers can print your photos in just minutes with very impressive results. Within days, the end results are delivered right at your very home.

Every canvas print is affordable. With as little as 25 dollars, you can print your photographs. You can print all you want. When you order though, please specify the exact dimensions of your finished product so that we can print it right away and it won’t be any hassle to you.

You can print even the pictures of your favorite artists, visited places, or your own artworks. This way, you can change the decorations in your house as many times as you want.

It is relatively easy to maintain a canvas print. With an original art piece, you need to protect it from outside elements like dust, moisture, and light. A canvas print does not need this kind of protection

If you are interested, you better dig that repository of pictures or search for your favorite art pieces now. Having these works transform from photos to canvas is a wonderful experience.

Factors that Contribute to the Long Lasting Quality of Canvas Prints

Many artists, just like photographers are very particular about detail. Their major concern is how to keep their photographs in the best quality possible for the longest period of time. With photography as their major expression of creativity and art, the last thing they want to happen is to put their masterpieces in the bin.

But did you know that the quality of a photos on canvas can last for more than 100 years? Canvas prints or photos printed on canvas will not only look nice on the day you receive it, but for a many, many years. You may ask how this is possible since most of the canvas prints are not even covered by glass. However, there are some factors that contribute to what seems to be an “ageless” photo canvas.

The first thing that we must consider is the quality of inks being used in printing photo to canvas. In order to produce crisp color detail, the company should only choose a high quality brand of ink so that it will produce vivid and more detailed colors on the canvas print. The inks that are used should only be tested by the printing industry as second to none inks in order to give better results.

The next factor is the quality of the canvas. Just the same as ink, you also need a high quality canvas so the ink will be properly printed. The ink may not properly embed if you use a low quality canvas.

The last factor that you have to consider is the sealant. What the sealant does is it puts a protective coat over the ink. In this way, the ink will retain its natural vividness since it will be protected from some environmental factors like moist, heat, and air. This is the reason why canvas print’s colors do not seem to fade even when exposed to light.

By combining all of these factors, you are sure to have long lasting and perfect canvas prints that can be the center of attention in any household. This is the best way to keep your most treasured moments like a wedding portrait in your home.

Canvas Prints as part of your interior design

It is very difficult to always come out with fresh interior ideas, but with canvas prints, you can never run out of plans. Drafting and executing a design for a certain room can be a very boundless and amusing to do. There is a wide range of natural and synthetic materials readily available in the market, and with the surplus of materials, there is no other place for the imagination to wander through but to run wild.

It’s a sad reality though that not all projects could allow designers to carry out free reign when it comes to designing. Most clients impose importance on a budget restriction and while this is supposedly hampering on the output, these are frequently the occasions when the interior designers have to thoroughly apply their resourcefulness, originality and creativity.

Most people would go for and prefer that in creating wall décors and wall accents, there would be relief sculptures, elegant tapestries, stylish art paintings or classy wall paper. An extraordinarily revolutionary but reasonably priced substitute to high end and high priced pieces is the use of canvas prints or poster prints.

Simply put, any canvas prints can easily become great wall accents. Just about any image, photo or design can be easily assembled and printed on canvas prints. Poster printing also fosters the variety of style and artistry that can be used in any design. It would of course be a lot much better if interior designers are inspired to produce original work on the canvas or poster print but canvas prints could also be without difficulty framed and suspended on one or two sides of a room to hand round as a framed painting.

Of course, posters can also be used as framed wall accents. They could also be used as fine art prints of classic and modern paintings. In addition, canvas prints can easily help maintain atmosphere. To enhance and position the mood for audio visual rooms or home theater systems, movie poster prints could also be utilized. Murals as canvas prints on stairwell wall or nursery rooms on the other hand could induce a very welcoming mood.

Canvas and poster prints are very easy and convenient to fabricate through readily available online printing services. There are a lot of websites where designers upload their custom designs for their potential customers to choose from, with the option of course of customizing the size.

Fortunately, with photo montage all you need is to collect photographs and combine them into one single image. Then if one photo stands up, simply overlay it as background.

The Advantages of Choosing Canvas Prints over Photo Paper Prints

Are you looking for the perfect gift that you can give on a very special occasion? Or are you someone who just wants to give a special present for your loved one? If your answer is yes, then why not try to give a canvas print as a present?

If this is your first time to encounter this term, canvas print is the outcome when you print a photo on canvas. This picture can be just any picture of your loved one or the celebrant of an occasion that is going to be printed out in to a canvas. Printing the photo on canvas is going to give a painting-like texture to it. It seems that your gift is a portrait painting that looks expensive and with class.

But you may say that you can just have the photos printed on a photo paper. You can do that however there are some advantages if you will have the photo on canvas. First of all, the quality of the picture sometimes relies on the paper that is used for printing. So when a different paper is used, the outcome may not be as good as what you are looking for. Whereas photos on canvas’ quality may not be an issue since those who will look at it is going to appreciate it as an art holistically. They will take this as paintings and that the saturation of the colors may just be an artist’s expression on his art.

The next advantage is that using photo papers on printing will give you a limitation in terms of size. Not only in printing, have even the frame sizes also had a limit in size. Unlike canvas prints, you can have it printed in any size that you want since canvases are flexible or stretchable & you can have it framed even without glass.

Lastly is that this will make your gift more special as it is going to be a good display on the receiver’s living room. The portrait painting like finish that a canvas print has will increase not only the monetary value of your gift but also its sentimental value.

MattsCanvas has the ability to transform your special photos to canvas using a craftsman skill and artists’ strictness when it comes to details. So who are we exactly?

At MattsCanvas it's a family affair! We are a family run business with over 15 years experience in the print and media industries. We have worked for companies such as British Aerospace, Scotish Television and Trinity Mirror, the largest print publisher in the United Kingdom. We don't take our canvas printing lightly! We feel the experience of working with these huge companies has allowed us to channel our knowledge and experience into our own company in order to offer the best canvas prints service available.

We work from our custom built workshop and design studio in Ayr, Scotland. Ayr is well known for poet Robert Burns and his home Burns Cottage is within walking distance of our workshop. Ayr also has a famous saying of, "Home of honest men and bonnie lassies", so hopefully this will give our customers some confidence when choosing us for their photos to canvas prints order or photos to canvas art! We are 100% lead by customer care. It is of utmost importance to us. We will soon be adding a customer feedback section. This is simply due to the high number of positive feedback comments we receive from our customers, so feel free to let us know what you think if you have not done already. We want to be able to put these comments to good use and to show our customers that we care about what they say & think!

Our custom workshop allows us to produce bespoke canvas print sizes. So why stick to a limited size option for your print? Our website offers our popular sizes only, due to the space needed to list each and every canvas print size possible, not to mention how cluttered the website would look. But feel free to get in touch if you require a bespoke canvas print size and we will be happy to provide a quote.

Being a family run business we all share the same passion for canvas art. This is reflected in our production of canvas prints. Every canvas print order received is processed like it is our first! Any business owners will know what i mean. The first order to come through the door is such an exciting experience and every effort is made to ensure the order is processed to the absolute highest standards. We carry this ethos with us throughout the day to day running of our business. We do not have underpaid staff who simply clock watch and produce your canvas prints as fast as they can to get out the door! Each and every canvas print is treated as part of the family & as it should be - a canvas art master piece!
